The seven mile Clingman‘s Dome road from Newfound Gap offers numerous pullouts and exquisite panoramic views of the Smoky highlands. A large parking area at the end of the road marks the trailhead leading a half mile to the observation tower on the summit of Clingman‘s Dome. At 6,643 feet, the Dome is the highest mountain in the park and third highest east of the Mississippi. The Appalachian Trail passes at the base of the observation tower and this point is the highest spot reached along the 2,178 mile trail which begins at Springer Mountain in Georgia and continues to Mount Katahdin in Maine. On clear days, the 360 degree views from the tower extend for over 100 miles.
